Case studies > Renewable energy: media, stakeholder and community engagement
The project at a glance
Epoch’s challenge was to launch the plans to develop the UK’s first commercial-scale geothermal power plant; an immerging renewable energy technology which was not previously considered in the same sphere as solar PV or wind energy generation, despite its benefits. Following the launch, Epoch was to establish and run a media relations and community outreach programme.
Objectives
- Launch the proposed geothermal power plant plans
- Introduce deep geothermal technology to the media and to policy-formers as a viable and beneficial renewable technology for the UK
- Position the client as a thought leader in the deep geothermal sector
- Lobby opinion formers on industry issues such as feed-in tariff rates, match funding, etc
- Run an ongoing media and community relations campaign
- Revitalise and enhance an outdated website with new copy and a new design
Results
- Over 30 pieces of national, broadcast, regional and trade coverage of the launch secured New GEL website completed just 2 weeks after contract signature
- Successful two day consultation for local residents resulted in 82% of attendees saying they supported the development of geothermal power in their area Meetings secured with local MPs and energy policy-makers to promote deep geothermal development in the UK
- GEL now part of a wider lobbying movement focused on feed-in tariff rates for renewable energy providers
