Beyond the ipad: what IT and telecoms could do for innovation, productivity and the economy

Speakers:

  • Matt Warman, Consumer Technology Editor, Daily Telegraph
  • JP Rangaswami, Chief Scientist, BT
  • Alan Patrick, Broadsight (and BIG POTATOES co-author)
  • Peter Cochrane, Cochrane Associates

After the indecisive UK election, and an absent Coalition vision, can we be decisive about setting an agenda for IT and telecoms? Today IT and telecoms are two of society's greatest tools for advancement out of the recession, but more importantly in getting back to creating the future.

How can IT and telecoms promote efficiency, productivity, quality and innovation beyond beyond their own domains -- from medicine and health to manufacturing and transport -- to qualitatively transform society? And what new (and old) models of innovation do we need within IT and telecoms to further develop their value?

Please join Epoch, BIG POTATOES and spiked for this agenda-setting debate.

Big Potatoes: Innovation, Science, R&D and the General Election

Despite its importance to our economic future, innovation has been largely overlooked since the credit crunch and only receives cursory consideration in the party manifestos for the UK General Election.

Big Potatoes: The London Manifesto for Innovation challenges the UK’s lethargy towards innovation, and outlines 14 guiding principles that will help foster a culture capable of producing new and transformative industries. The manifesto argues science, innovation and wealth creation are inextricably linked and now is the time for our political leaders to invest in long-term, high-quality research and development, that will help overcome the economic and climate challenges we face.

  • James Wilsdon, Director of the Science Policy Centre, The Royal Society
  • Dr Norman Lewis, Chief Innovation Officer, Open-Knowledge (former Director of Technology research, Orange)
  • Stefan Stern, management columnist, Financial Times
